Why Unknown Colombia

When I launched the blog back in 2017, I had the following things in mind:

  • Showcase the less travelled places in Colombia - places that do not exist in tourist maps

  • Travel to every single department and showcase its culture and differences

  • Travel by road wherever possible and document the route 

Between balancing a busy work schedule and managing household chores, and travel, I did not do justice to the blog. 

My gear or the lack of it

What I did not have back then was a proper shooting gear. My phone back then was a Moto Z  and I was ambitious enough to use it as the only equipment. While the device was not bad, it definitely was not the one supporting the blog.

Lost in time - Getting lazy

Down the line, interests change and I did not open the blog for a long time. Though I invested in a GoPro 7 and a Samsung Galaxy S10+, and I had accumulated tons of photo and video materials, I was waiting for a rainy day to restart and shape up that wanderlust spirit.


Fresh vision - Failed projects revisited

During this time, I also developed an urge of revisiting the past visited places and see them through fresh eyes. I wanted to document them my new equipment, complete failed projects and trips. One of my dreams was to relive the trips that I had planned and got lost, plan for new ones that were always on the back of my head. This made me make some memorable trips last year.

Unknown Colombia 2.0

The quarantine time gave me a moment of self realisation that unless I push myself forward, this engine will never launch. So here comes Unknown Colombia 2.0 like never before. I am going to make my best effort on this project,yet again.

If I give the following clues about this place, how many of you would be able to find out what this place is? 1. This town used to be an important trade stop between the indigenous people from the Andes and the llanos (Colombian plains) before the colonial period. Trade used to be on emerald and salt. 2. The Spanish conquered this region from the cacique of Cora looking for esmerladas (emeralds). The cacique of Cora was a subordinate to the Zaque of Hunza. That is Tenza for you. Well, Tenza, Boyacá. How did I find out about Valle de Tenza The way I got to know about tenza is a bit curious. There are lots of yellow buses from Valle de Tenza that go from Bogotá outward seemingly towards this unknown region. The Pillars of The Beach

  A fun fact to begin the post.  Though La Playa is considered a town with colonial architecture, it was founded after Colombia’s independence. I woke up excited in the morning for a full day of exploration in La Playa. The place where I stayed was a farm. I spent some time in the morning exploring the farm. They had flowers, fruits such as orange, granadilla and also corn. I noticed that from the farm, the church was visible in the distance. I thought it was going to be too far, but no. It was not as far as I thought.  The hotel also had viewpoints over the Estoraques, which is a sight to behold in the morning sun. The Beach's foreign traveller

  This post is a continuation of the The Pillars of The Beach post. If you have not read it, I suggest you read it to follow the story of my stay in La Playa, away from the coast. A trivia to begin with - How is the first main street of La Playa named? It is named Calle de Belén de Jesus - translating to Jesus of Bethlehem Street.  Continuing from where I left in the previous post, after a long and tiring day of exploration, I went back to the hotel for some rest and refreshments. Before going though, I was looking for dinner options for me to come back later. There was a pizza place run by 2 brothers, right in the center and I asked if they could make some vegetarian pizzas. They gladly agreed, and I told them that I would return later in the evening. During this day, I was glad that it did not rain. It had rained the previous day though.
